Why The Last Jedi is better

Let’s assume Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is the better film. I would merit it on its clever way of moving the story along for one. Other merits are its engaging story, the visual style, and the personalities of the new characters. It’s got the goods in those departments.

Most of all, it delivers in its own peculiar way, just like Jacob loving Leah less than Rachel. Because Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi has more than The Force Awakens.

The Last Jedi delivers a more colourful, richer experience, in terms of visuals, but also in terms of substance and bringing Star Wars up to date with its contemporary style humour.

It’s not as action-packed as The Force Awakens. Rather than get us bogged down in action, when it does deliver the action, you’re always getting in behind it.

This means something is working right. Whereas movies like Pacific Rim are so filled with action but no story to back it up. The action is just a series of set-pieces and I for one can’t get involved.

The Force Awakens has good action scenes, but not up to the level of emotional engagement that The Last Jedi reaches.

The Last Jedi also has more heart. Luke and Leia are reunited, Luke makes a singular stand against the imperials, and heroes are born.

This one has it all.

It’s not a great movie of all time, but it’s got it where it counts and makes “point five past light speed”.

They should make more blockbusters like these.

Perhaps the next Star Wars is going to go back to the original style that J.J. Abrams brought to The Force Awakens.

But director writer Rian Johnson brought something fresh to Star Wars with The Last Jedi.

If they play it safe with the former style that J.J. Abrams brought, more people may see it, after Solo underperforming at the box office and The Last Jedi dividing audiences.

So, after my euphoria over The Last Jedi, will the next Star Wars be a let-down?

Well, it’s bound to work, just not in the same style as The Last Jedi. Personally, a movie that does not capitalize on The Last Jedi would be a let-down. But who knows what they will come up with next?
